Painting Description
shazzar's Feast is a painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn, completed around 1635–1638. Currently housed in the National Gallery, London, the work is in oil on canvas and measures approximately 167.6cm high by 209.2cm wide.
The painting is a representation of the biblical story in the Book of Daniel, 5:1-31. It captures the moment of terror when the Babylonian king Belshazzar sees a divine hand writing an ominous message on the palace during a feast, an event that would herald the fall of his kingdom to the Persians.
Rembrandt's masterful use of chiaroscuro—the dramatic contrast of light and dark—is a key feature of Belshazzar's Feast, creating heightened drama and emotion amid the luxurious detailing of the Babylonian court. The realism and richness in detail evoke a sense of immediacy, pulling viewers into the biblical scene.
In Rembrandt's portrayal of the story, King Belshazzar is seen in shock as he witnesses the supernatural event, exemplifying the artist's ability to depict human emotion and psychological depth. The written message appears in the ancient script of Hebrew, in mirror image, demonstrating Rembrandt's meticulous research and attention to historical accuracy.
Belshazzar's Feast is considered one of Rembrandt's significant religious works, with art historians frequently analyzing its themes of divine judgement, earthly power, and fear.
