Painting Description
"The Transfiguration" is a masterpiece of High Renaissance art by the Italian painter Raphael, and is widely regarded as one of his greatest works. Completed shortly before his untimely death in 1520, the painting exemplifies Raphael's mature style, characterized by its dramatic use of color and light, harmonious composition, and profound emotional expression. Measuring 405 cm × 278 cm (159 in × 109 in), it is a large oil painting on wood that was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, who would later become Pope Clement VII.
The painting depicts the biblical story of the Transfiguration of Jesus, as described in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In this event, Jesus is transformed and becomes radiant upon a mountain in the presence of prophets Moses and Elijah, as well as his disciples Peter, James, and John. Raphael's interpretation of the Transfiguration is notable for its complex dual composition, which juxtaposes the divine spectacle of the Transfiguration above with a scene of human frailty and suffering below, where the apostles are unable to heal a possessed boy.
Raphael's work on "The Transfiguration" was concurrent with his work on another significant commission, "The Mass at Bolsena," for the Vatican's Stanza di Eliodoro. "The Transfiguration" remained in Raphael's studio until his death and was then placed over the artist's bed in his honor during his funeral. The painting was eventually acquired by the Vatican and is currently housed in the Pinacoteca Vaticana in Vatican City.
As Raphael's last painting, "The Transfiguration" is often seen as a summation of his artistic achievements, blending the naturalism of the early Renaissance with the dynamism and grandeur that would come to define the Mannerist movement. The work has been influential in the history of art, inspiring subsequent generations of artists with its powerful narrative and technical brilliance.
