Painting Description
''The Transfiguration'' is a renowned masterpiece of High Renaissance art by the Italian painter Raphael, who began the work in 1516 and completed it shortly before his death in 1520. Commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, the painting was intended for Narbonne Cathedral in France but was instead sent to San Pietro in Montorio, Rome, upon its completion. Measuring 405 cm × 278 cm (159 in × 109 in), ''The Transfiguration'' is the last painting by Raphael and is considered one of his greatest works, showcasing his artistic maturity and the synthesis of his development in the Renaissance ideals of beauty, harmony, and order.
The painting is divided into two distinct parts, which together illustrate a narrative from the Gospel accounts in the New Testament. The upper section depicts the biblical event of the Transfiguration of Jesus, where Christ is seen radiant, floating above the mountaintop flanked by the prophets Moses and Elijah, as the Apostles Peter, James, and John cower in awe below. The lower section presents a dramatic contrast, showing the Apostles' unsuccessful attempt to heal a possessed boy, which emphasizes the human suffering and the theme of faith.
Raphael's ''The Transfiguration'' is celebrated for its complex composition, dramatic use of color, and the emotional intensity of the figures. The painting's dual narrative structure and the stark contrast between the divine radiance above and the earthly turmoil below have been interpreted as a reflection of the artist's response to the theological debates of his time, particularly those concerning the nature of the Church and the need for spiritual reform.
After Raphael's death, ''The Transfiguration'' was placed over the artist's bed where he lay in state, and it has since been held in high esteem throughout art history. Today, the painting is housed in the Vatican Museums, where it continues to be admired for its artistic significance and as a pinnacle of Renaissance painting.
