Painting Description
"Study of the Head of an Apostle" is a revered work by the renowned Renaissance artist, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, or more commonly known as Raphael. Prepared as a preliminary sketch for his seminal work, the "Transfiguration", this drawing delineates the head of one of the apostles witnessed in the lower part of the completed painting. The drawing is preserved and exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford, Kingdom.
Executed in the last years of Raphael's life, around 1519–20, the drawing showcases the artist's profound understanding of anatomy, invoking a sense of depth, characterization, and human emotion. Rendering the study in black chalk on a paper, Raphael was able to not only provide an insight into his workflow and methodologies as a draughtsman, but also forecast the painstaking detail and emotive power that would eventually be evoked in the "Transfiguration". It is said that Raphael's practice of completing detailed studies were pivotal in elevating drawing to an independent art form outside its traditional utility as a preparatory tool.
In capturing the man's upward gaze and his parted lips, "Study of the Head of an Apostle" portrays an emotional intensity and dramatic expressiveness characteristic of the High Renaissance. This sketch consolidates Raphael's mastery of chiaroscuro, the contrast of light and dark, to emphasize three-dimensionality, depth, and volume.
The drawing came into the hands of the Ashmolean Museum as part of the bequest by philanthropist Chambers Hall in 1855, and has since remained as one of the institution's most valuable pieces, respected as a clear testament of the artist's technical virtuosity and his meticulous approach to portraying religious episodes.
