Painting Description
''Entombment'' is a renowned painting by the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael, completed in 1507 as an altarpiece for the Baglioni Chapel in the Church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia, Italy. Also known as "The Deposition," the work is currently housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. This masterpiece is a significant example of Raphael's early artistic development and showcases his ability to synthesize influences from other prominent artists of the time, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and his teacher Perugino.
The painting, oil on wood, measures 184 x 176 cm and depicts the biblical scene of Christ's body being placed in the tomb following his crucifixion. The composition is notable for its dramatic use of chiaroscuro and the emotional intensity conveyed through the figures' expressions and gestures. Raphael's work on the ''Entombment'' is characterized by a complex arrangement of figures, a mastery of perspective, and a refined use of color that would come to define his later works.
Commissioned by Atalanta Baglioni to honor her slain son, Grifonetto Baglioni, the painting is imbued with both personal and spiritual significance. Raphael's ''Entombment'' stands as a testament to the transitional period in art history, bridging the gap between the ideals of the High Renaissance and the more expressive and dynamic Mannerist movement that followed. Its influence is evident in the works of subsequent generations of artists, and it remains a critical piece for the study of Renaissance art and Raphael's oeuvre.
