Painting Description
The Transfiguration is a renowned painting by the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino), widely considered one of his greatest works. Executed between 1516 and 1520, the painting was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, who later became Pope Clement VII. The work was intended for the Narbonne Cathedral in France but remained in Rome after Raphael's untimely death in 1520. The Transfiguration is notable for being Raphael's last painting, and it was left unfinished at the time of his death, with some parts completed by his assistants, including Giulio Romano.
The painting is a large altarpiece that measures approximately 405 cm by 278 cm (159 in by 109 in). It is currently housed in the Pinacoteca Vaticana of the Vatican Museums. The composition of The Transfiguration is divided into two distinct yet interconnected parts. The upper section depicts the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, where Jesus is shown in a radiant, divine form, flanked by the prophets Moses and Elijah. Below them are the three apostles—Peter, James, and John—who have fallen to the ground, overwhelmed by the vision.
The lower section of the painting presents a stark contrast, illustrating the scene of a possessed boy being brought to the apostles for healing. This part of the composition is characterized by its dynamic and dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as the intense emotional expressions of the figures. The juxtaposition of the serene, divine revelation above and the chaotic, earthly struggle below serves to highlight the dual nature of Christ as both divine and human.
Raphael's masterful use of color, composition, and anatomical precision in The Transfiguration has been widely praised. The painting is often interpreted as a profound theological statement, emphasizing the transformative power of faith and the ultimate triumph of divine grace over human suffering. The Transfiguration remains a pivotal work in the history of art, showcasing Raphael's unparalleled ability to convey complex spiritual themes through his exceptional artistic skill.
