Painting Description
"The Madonna of the Pinks" ("La Madonna dei Garofani") is a small devotional painting by the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino), created around 1506-1507. The painting, which measures 27.9 cm × 22.4 cm (11 in × 8.8 in), is executed in oil on yew wood and depicts the Virgin Mary playing with the Christ child and giving him carnations (pinks). The carnation is a symbol of the Passion of Christ, foreshadowing his crucifixion, and is a motif often encountered in religious Renaissance art.
The composition showcases Raphael's skill in creating a tender and intimate interaction between mother and child, a theme that he explored throughout his career. The figures are modelled with subtle gradations of light and shade, known as chiaroscuro, which gives them a soft and three-dimensional appearance. The background of the painting features a detailed landscape, which adds depth and context to the intimate foreground scene.
"The Madonna of the Pinks" was not always attributed to Raphael. For a long time, it was thought to be the work of a follower or imitator, until the late 20th century when closer examination and scientific analysis confirmed Raphael's authorship. The painting's provenance includes a period in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland, whose family owned it for nearly 200 years. In 2004, after a high-profile public campaign, the painting was acquired by the National Gallery in London, where it remains on display.
The work is considered one of Raphael's most important early devotional paintings and is celebrated for its emotional warmth and technical finesse. "The Madonna of the Pinks" continues to be a subject of scholarly interest and is frequently included in discussions of Raphael's development as an artist and his influence on the course of Western art.
