Painting Description
"The Madonna of the Pinks" (''La Madonna dei Garofani'') is a small devotional painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino), created around 1506-1507. The artwork depicts the Virgin Mary playing with the Christ Child, who clutches a pink carnation (garofano in Italian), which symbolizes the future Passion of Christ. This intimate and tender representation of the Madonna and Child reflects the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, whom Raphael encountered in Florence, as well as the humanist approach to religious subjects that was becoming popular during the Renaissance.
The painting is renowned for its delicate execution, the soft modeling of the figures, and the harmonious use of color. Measuring approximately 27.9 cm × 22.4 cm (11 in × 8.8 in), it is painted in oil on yew wood. "The Madonna of the Pinks" is considered one of Raphael's finest small-scale works and is characteristic of his early style, which combines elements of Perugino, his teacher, with a new understanding of light, shadow, and space.
The provenance of the painting was long disputed, with some attributing it to a follower of Raphael rather than the master himself. However, after its acquisition by the National Gallery, London, in 2004, following a high-profile fundraising campaign to prevent its sale to the Getty Museum, extensive scientific analysis and scholarly research confirmed its attribution to Raphael. The painting's authenticity was established based on evidence from infrared reflectography, pigment analysis, and stylistic evaluation, which aligned with Raphael's known works from the period.
"The Madonna of the Pinks" has been exhibited in several major museums and has undergone conservation to preserve its delicate details and vibrant colors. It remains a significant example of Raphael's early mastery and his contribution to the development of the Italian High Renaissance style. The painting continues to be a subject of study for art historians and a beloved masterpiece for visitors to the National Gallery.
