Painting Description
The Madonna della Sedina is an esteemed work of art by the renowned Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, more famously known as Raphael. Believed to have been painted between 1513 and 1514, this oil on wood masterpiece, measuring 82 cm × 57 cm, is currently housed in the Pitti Palace in Florence.
The illustration is believed to have gotten its name "Madonna della Seggiola" or "Madonna of the chair" from the circular and domestic setting of the composition. The painting brings forward an intimate domestic scene, divergent from Raphael's earlier works which often depicted divine characters in formal arrangements.
In this work, Raphael beautifully embodies Mary, holding Infant Jesus on her lap, in an affectionate maternal scene. John the Baptist, shown at the lower left corner, communicates a message of faith with a cross. The composition portrays a unique blending of human sentiment and religious undertone.
Raphael's chiaroscuro technique, the effects of light and shade, has been employed here, emphasising the spatial depth and bringing out focal characters. Despite the geometric simplicity, the artwork is celebrated for its representation of warmth and tenderness, and the innate tranquility, attesting to Raphael's prowess in capturing human emotion.
Throughout the centuries, Raphael's Madonna della Sedina has been greatly esteemed, influencing countless artists and captivating the admiration of art aficionados across the world. This timeless work of art continues to showcase Raphael's contribution to the Italian High Renaissance and his mastered ability to encapsulate the sacred in the everyday human affair.
