Painting Description
"The Death of Ananias" is a significant tapestry from a series illustrating the Acts of the Apostles, designed by the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino, 1483–1520). This particular work was woven between 1695 and 1698 at the Beauvais Workshop in France, under the direction of the esteemed tapestry producer Philippe Behagle (1641–1705). The series was originally commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel and the cartoons (full-scale designs) were created by Raphael and his workshop between 1515 and 1516. These cartoons are considered among Raphael's greatest achievements and are held in high regard for their composition and mastery of form.
"The Death of Ananias" depicts the dramatic biblical episode from the Acts of the Apostles (5:1-11) in which Ananias falls dead at the feet of the Apostle Peter after lying about the proceeds of a sale of land, an act of deceit against the Holy Spirit. Raphael's design captures the moment with emotional intensity and dynamic movement, characteristic of his late style.
The Beauvais Workshop, known for its high-quality tapestry production, was one of the leading French manufacturers of the time. Under Behagle's leadership, the workshop produced some of the most exquisite tapestries of the late 17th century, often based on designs by prominent artists. The weaving of "The Death of Ananias" in the late 17th century reflects the enduring appeal of Raphael's designs and the continued demand for tapestries as a symbol of prestige and piety.
Today, the tapestry is not only a testament to Raphael's enduring influence on art but also an example of the collaborative nature of tapestry production, which brought together the creative genius of artists and the technical skill of weavers. It remains an important work for the study of Renaissance art and the history of European tapestry.
