Painting Description
"St. George and the Dragon" is a small oil painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), created around 1504–1506. This artwork is one of the early pieces by Raphael, who was to become one of the most celebrated painters of the period, known for his mastery in the depiction of the human form and for his contribution to the development of the High Renaissance style.
The painting depicts the legendary tale of St. George, the Christian knight, slaying a dragon to save a princess. The narrative is derived from the Golden Legend, a collection of hagiographies that was widely popular during the Renaissance. Raphael's interpretation of the subject matter is notable for its dynamic composition and the elegance of the figures. St. George is portrayed in the act of charging the dragon with his lance, while the princess can be seen in the background, near the dragon's cave.
Measuring 28.5 x 21.5 cm, the painting is executed with a fine attention to detail, a characteristic of Raphael's early works. The landscape in the painting features a serene background with a winding river and a distant city, which contrasts with the violent encounter in the foreground. This juxtaposition is reflective of the High Renaissance's quest for harmony and balance, even in scenes of conflict.
"St. George and the Dragon" is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It is one of two versions of the subject by Raphael; the other is a larger version, which is part of the collection at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting at the National Gallery of Art was part of the collection of the Duke of Urbino, Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, an early patron of Raphael.
The artwork is significant not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its cultural and historical context. It exemplifies the chivalric ideals of the time and reflects the influence of the court of Urbino, where Raphael was trained. The painting's provenance and the artist's development of his unique style, which would later influence the course of Western art, make "St. George and the Dragon" a critical piece for understanding Raphael's early career and the evolution of Renaissance art.
