Painting Description
Raphael, born Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino (April 6 or March 28, 1483 – April 6, 1520), was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period.
Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop and, despite his death at 37, leaving a large body of work. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central, and the largest, work of his career. The best known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. After his early years in Umbria and Florence, his last dozen years were spent in Rome, working for two Popes and their close associates.
Raphael's work is well known for its symmetry and the harmonious composition of his figures, a reflection of the Italian Renaissance's pursuit of ideal beauty and harmony. His influence was widespread during his own life and continued to grow posthumously, shaping the development of European art long after his death. His mastery in the use of color and his refined technique of defining form established him as a paragon of Renaissance artistry.
The "Gallery of Portraits" published in 1833 is a collection that includes Raphael's self-portrait, showcasing the artist's features with a direct gaze that has captivated audiences for centuries. This self-portrait is often celebrated for its insight into the artist's character and for its historical significance as one of the few self-representations by Raphael. The portrait is characterized by its detailed rendering and the artist's use of light and shadow, which exemplify his skill in capturing human expression and contribute to the work's enduring legacy.
