Painting Description
"Ezekiel's Vision" is a renowned painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino), created circa 1518. The artwork is a small oil on panel painting, measuring 40 x 30 cm, and is currently housed in the Palatine Gallery of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Italy. This masterpiece is one of Raphael's later works, completed in the final years of his short life—he died in 1520 at the age of 37.
The painting depicts a biblical scene from the Book of Ezekiel, where the prophet Ezekiel experiences a divine vision. In this vision, as described in the Old Testament, Ezekiel sees God amidst an elaborate chariot, accompanied by four cherubim, each with four faces—that of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle—representing the four evangelists. Raphael's interpretation of this scene is noted for its dramatic use of color and light, as well as the dynamic composition that captures the mystical and otherworldly experience of the prophet.
"Ezekiel's Vision" is characterized by its rich iconography and the harmonious blend of human figures with the divine, a hallmark of Raphael's artistic style. The painting is also significant for its influence on later Renaissance and Baroque artists, who were inspired by Raphael's ability to convey complex theological themes through his art.
The provenance of "Ezekiel's Vision" traces back to the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici in the 17th century, indicating the high esteem in which Raphael's work was held by art collectors and patrons of the time. Today, the painting is admired for its historical importance and as an exemplar of Raphael's mature period, reflecting the artist's continued evolution and his impact on the course of Western art.
