Painting Description
Civitas Londinum, commonly known as the Agas map, is a bird's-eye view map of London first printed circa 1561. Attributed to surveyor Ralph Agas, the map is one of the earliest detailed representations of the city of London during the Tudor period. Although the exact date of creation remains uncertain, it is widely believed to have been produced between 1560 and 1570. The map is particularly notable for its detailed depiction of buildings, landmarks, and streets, providing valuable insights into the urban landscape of London before the Great Fire of 1666.
The Civitas Londinum spans approximately 2 feet by 6 feet, engraved on wood blocks and printed on eight sheets of paper. It is often referred to as the "Woodcut" map due to its method of production. The map's perspective is from the south looking north, offering a comprehensive view that includes structures such as The Tower of London, Old St Paul's Cathedral, London Bridge, and the original Globe Theatre.
Despite its age and the fragile nature of its medium, several copies of the Civitas Londinum still exist today, preserved in various British institutions. The map is not only a critical resource for historians studying the urban development of London but also serves as a fascinating artifact of cartographic design and early modern city planning. Its intricate detail and expansive coverage make the Civitas Londinum a cornerstone in the study of London's historical geography.
