Painting Description
"St Cecilia (detail) 2" is a fragment of the larger altarpiece "The Ecstasy of St. Cecilia," painted by the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Raffaello Sanzio, commonly known as Raphael. Created between 1514 and 1517, this masterpiece was commissioned for the church of San Giovanni in Monte, Bologna, by the noblewoman Elena Duglioli dall'Olio. The painting is celebrated for its exquisite depiction of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, who is portrayed in a state of divine rapture, listening to celestial music.
Raphael's work is noted for its harmonious composition, delicate use of color, and the serene, almost ethereal quality of the figures. In the detail of St. Cecilia, Raphael captures the saint with her eyes lifted towards the heavens, embodying a sense of spiritual transcendence and divine inspiration. Her expression is one of serene devotion, and she holds a small organ, which symbolizes her association with music and her role as a patroness of musicians.
The painting also includes other saints: St. Paul, St. John the Evangelist, St. Augustine, and St. Mary Magdalene, each rendered with Raphael's characteristic grace and attention to detail. The background features a choir of angels, enhancing the heavenly atmosphere of the scene.
"St Cecilia (detail) 2" exemplifies Raphael's mastery in portraying human emotion and divine beauty, making it a significant work in the canon of Renaissance art. The altarpiece as a whole is housed in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, where it continues to be admired for its artistic and spiritual depth.
