Painting Description
"September" is one of the twelve calendar illustrations found in the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a principal exemplar of International Gothic manuscript illumination. Created by the Limbourg brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jean, in the early 15th century, this particular miniature stands out for its detailed depiction of the grape harvest, a seasonal activity associated with the month of September in the medieval agricultural calendar. Commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, the manuscript is renowned for its luxurious decoration and the vivid portrayal of medieval life, reflecting the duke's status and the period's artistic and cultural values.
The "September" illumination, specifically, showcases the grape harvest on the Duke's estates, with laborers picking and processing grapes to make wine, a valuable commodity in medieval Europe. The scene is set against the backdrop of the Château de Saumur, one of the Duke's many residences, meticulously rendered to reflect its architectural details and the surrounding landscape. This inclusion not only serves to document the activities and social structures of the time but also acts as a visual testament to the Duke's wealth and power.
The Limbourg brothers' work on the Très Riches Heures, including the "September" miniature, is celebrated for its innovative use of color, perspective, and light, marking a departure from the flatter, more stylized representations common in earlier medieval art. Their attention to detail, both in the depiction of the human figures and the natural landscape, contributes to the manuscript's reputation as a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art.
Unfortunately, the Limbourg brothers died in 1416 before they could complete the manuscript, leaving some pages unfinished. It was later worked on by other artists, but the "September" page stands as a testament to the Limbourg brothers' skill and artistic vision. Today, the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry is housed in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France, where it remains a key object of study for art historians and a high point of medieval manuscript illumination.
