Painting Description
Tomb of Maria Clementina Sobieski is an 18th-century funerary monument created by the illustrious artist Pietro Bracci. It stands as an integral part of the and cultural patrimony of the St. Peter Basilica in Rome, where it is. Commemorating Maria Clementina Sobieski, the wife of James Francis Edward Stuart, often known as the 'Old Pretender', the tomb immortalizes her status as a symbol of the Jacobite claim to the British throne.
The monument is considered one of the high points of Pietro Bracci's career, an artist renowned for his contributions to Roman Baroque sculpture. His other works include the renowned Fountain of Trevi where he sculpted the central figure of Oceanus. However, it is in the Tomb of Maria Clementina Sobieski that Bracci's artistic prowess saliently materializes in both design concept and execution detailing.
Unveiled in 1742, the tomb serves as a tribute to the Polish princess who passed away in 1735. The monument features an elaborate sculpture depicting the triumphant figure of Religion, standing above a representation of the princess personified as a recumbent figure. Aside from these, an image of an angel holds a tablet that commemorates Sobieski's royalty and her deeply held faith, while the figure of Faith refers to a Jacobite emblem, thus indirectly signifying her husband's claim to the throne of Britain. The tomb is also ornamented with acanthus scrolls and putti, elements characteristic of Bracci's style.
Over the years, the Tomb of Maria Clementina Sobieski has stood the test of time and continues to be a noteworthy artifact in the study of 18th-century art history, symbolizing both artistic finesse and deep-rooted historical symbolisms.
