Painting Description
''Rosa banksiae'', commonly known as Lady Banks' rose, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family, native to central and western China, in the provinces of Gansu, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Sichuan, at altitudes of 500–2,200 metres (1,600–7,200 ft). It was first introduced to Europe in 1807, and it is named after the wife of the botanist Sir Joseph Banks. An illustration of ''Rosa banksiae'', from ''Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs'' (1827), is one of the notable works by the renowned botanical illustrator Pierre-Joseph Redouté.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), known as the "Raphael of flowers," was a Belgian painter and botanist famous for his watercolors of roses, lilies, and other flowers at Malmaison, many of which were published as large, color-plate books. ''Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs'' is one of Redouté's most celebrated collections, which includes 144 color plates of flowers, published between 1827 and 1833. The work features a selection of the most beautiful flowers cultivated in the gardens of his time, and it is considered a masterpiece of botanical illustration.
The illustration of ''Rosa banksiae'' in ''Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs'' is a testament to Redouté's skill and attention to detail. It captures the delicate form and beauty of the Lady Banks' rose with scientific accuracy and artistic grace. The depiction of the rose in full bloom, with its clusters of small, double flowers, showcases the climbing habit of the plant and its characteristic thornless stems. Redouté's illustration not only serves as a valuable scientific record but also as an exquisite piece of art that continues to inspire botanical artists and rose enthusiasts alike.
The ''Rosa banksiae'' illustration by Redouté is significant not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its contribution to the horticultural knowledge of the time. It played a role in popularizing the cultivation of this rose species in European gardens and influenced the breeding of new varieties. Today, Redouté's work remains an important historical document in the field of botany and horticulture, as well as a celebrated example of early 19th-century botanical art.
