Painting Description
Amaryllis Brasiliensis, from "Les Liliacees" (1816), is a botanical illustration by the renowned Belgian artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté, who is often referred to as the "Raphael of flowers." Redouté's work is celebrated for its scientific accuracy and artistic finesse, and "Les Liliacees" is one of his most significant contributions to botanical art and literature. The collection, published over eight years in eight volumes, includes a series of 486 watercolor paintings depicting the lily family and its relatives.
The illustration of Amaryllis Brasiliensis specifically portrays a species of the Amaryllidaceae family, which is native to Brazil, as suggested by its name. Redouté's depiction is notable for its vivid coloration and detailed representation of the plant's structure, from the bulb and leaves to the striking trumpet-shaped flowers. This work, like others in the series, was based on live specimens, which Redouté had the opportunity to study at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
Redouté's "Les Liliacees" was commissioned by Empress Joséphine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was an avid patron of the arts and a passionate horticulturist. The collection served both as an artistic endeavor and a scientific record, contributing to the study of botany during a time when exploration and classification of new species were burgeoning.
Amaryllis Brasiliensis, along with the other illustrations in "Les Liliacees," reflects the intersection of art and science in the early 19th century and remains an important historical document for both fields. Redouté's work continues to be admired for its beauty and precision, and original copies of "Les Liliacees" are highly prized by collectors and institutions around the world.
