Painting Description
"Summer Hats" (also known as "Two Sisters" or "On the Terrace") is an oil painting by the French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, completed in 1881. The painting, which is one of Renoir's most celebrated works, depicts two young women seated at a table on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise restaurant along the Seine river in Chatou, France. The Maison Fournaise was a popular spot for the Impressionists, and Renoir captured the leisurely atmosphere and the play of light with his distinctive brushwork and vibrant color palette.
The two figures in the painting, although commonly referred to as sisters, were not related. The elder, wearing a blue flounced dress and a straw hat adorned with flowers, is model Jeanne Darlot, while the younger girl, dressed in white and sporting a wide-brimmed hat with a blue ribbon, is a model known only as Alphonsine. Renoir's focus on the textures of their attire, the foliage in the background, and the interaction of light and shadow exemplifies his interest in capturing the effects of sunlight on surfaces.
"Summer Hats" is notable for its reflection of contemporary Parisian fashion and the social habits of the time, as well as for its technical execution that aligns with the Impressionist movement's emphasis on capturing the transient effects of light and color. The painting is also a testament to Renoir's fascination with feminine beauty and his skill in portraying the human figure within a vibrant, natural setting.
The artwork is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to be a popular piece for visitors and scholars alike. "Summer Hats" has been the subject of extensive art historical research and is frequently included in discussions of Renoir's oeuvre and the broader Impressionist movement.
