Painting Description
"Exaltation of the Cross" (c. 1466) is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca, part of his larger work, the "Legend of the True Cross" fresco cycle. This series of frescoes, considered one of Piero's masterpieces, adorns the walls of the Cappella Maggiore in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo, Italy. The "Exaltation of the Cross" is a pivotal scene within this cycle, depicting the moment when the True Cross, the cross upon which Jesus was crucified, is raised and revered.
Piero della Francesca (c. 1415/1420 – 1492) was renowned for his mathematical precision, use of perspective, and clear, calm compositions. His work on the "Legend of the True Cross" began around 1452 and was completed over a decade later. The cycle narrates the story of the True Cross from its origins as the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden to its rediscovery by Saint Helena, Constantine the Great's mother, during the 4th century.
In the "Exaltation of the Cross," Piero della Francesca illustrates the episode where the Cross is triumphantly displayed to the people of Jerusalem. The fresco is marked by its grand architectural setting, a hallmark of Piero's style, which provides a stage for the solemn ceremony and helps to create a sense of depth and space. The figures in the fresco are depicted with a sense of gravity and dignity, characteristic of Piero's approach to human representation.
The fresco is celebrated for its use of light and shadow, which adds to the three-dimensionality of the figures and the overall harmony of the composition. Piero's mastery of color is also evident in the fresco's subtle yet rich palette, which contributes to the scene's solemn and majestic atmosphere.
As a significant work of the Early Renaissance, the "Exaltation of the Cross" reflects the era's interest in classical antiquity, humanism, and the emerging knowledge of perspective. It is a testament to Piero della Francesca's skill as a painter and his intellectual engagement with the artistic and scientific discoveries of his time. The fresco continues to be studied and admired for its aesthetic qualities and its place within the context of Renaissance art history.
