Painting Description
"Joseph Recognised by His Brothers" is a renowned fresco by the German painter Peter von Cornelius (1783–1867), a leading artist of the German Romantic and Nazarene movements. This work is part of a series of frescoes created by Cornelius for the Casa Bartholdy in Rome, which was commissioned by the Prussian consul Jacob Ludwig Salomon Bartholdy. The frescoes were designed to decorate the walls of the consul's residence and were completed between 1816 and 1818.
The fresco depicts the moment from the biblical story of Joseph, found in the Book of Genesis, when Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers who had previously sold him into slavery. This poignant scene is a dramatic representation of forgiveness and reconciliation, themes that resonate with the Christian ethos of redemption and were particularly meaningful in the context of the post-Napoleonic era in which Cornelius was working.
Cornelius' work is characterized by its clear composition, linear style, and the use of fresco technique, which involves applying pigment to wet plaster, a method revived by the Nazarenes. The Nazarene movement, to which Cornelius belonged, sought to revive the spirituality and simplicity of medieval and early Renaissance art, distancing itself from the perceived decadence of contemporary academic art.
The frescoes from Casa Bartholdy, including "Joseph Recognised by His Brothers," were later acquired by the King of Prussia and transferred to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, where they remain a significant example of early 19th-century German art and a testament to the revival of fresco painting in modern European art.
Peter von Cornelius' depiction of Joseph and his brothers is celebrated for its emotional depth and its influence on the course of German painting, marking a departure from neoclassical ideals and laying the groundwork for the Romantic movement in Germany. The fresco stands as a testament to the artist's mastery of large-scale compositions and his ability to convey complex narratives through visual art.
