Painting Description
"Joseph Interpreting Pharaoh's Dream" (1816-17) is a significant fresco by the German painter Peter von Cornelius, a leading artist of the German Romantic movement and a prominent member of the Nazarene group. The fresco is part of a series created for the Casa Bartholdy in Rome, which was the residence of the Prussian consul Jacob Ludwig Salomon Bartholdy. This series was commissioned to decorate the reception room and is considered one of Cornelius's major early works, showcasing his talent in monumental painting and his commitment to religious and historical subjects.
The fresco depicts the biblical story from the Book of Genesis, where Joseph, known for his ability to interpret dreams, is called upon by the Pharaoh of Egypt to explain the meaning of his troubling dreams. According to the biblical narrative, Joseph interprets the dreams as a prophecy of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine, and advises the Pharaoh to store surplus grain during the plentiful years to prepare for the hardship ahead. This interpretation earns Joseph high favor with the Pharaoh, leading to his rise from a prisoner to a powerful government official in Egypt.
Cornelius's work is characterized by its clear composition and the use of neoclassical elements, reflecting the influence of early Italian Renaissance art and the frescoes of Raphael, which the Nazarenes sought to revive. The fresco is notable for its linear clarity, harmonious color palette, and the expressive gestures and faces of the figures, which convey the gravity of the scene. The work exemplifies the Nazarene focus on spirituality, simplicity, and purity in art, as well as their rejection of the prevailing neoclassical and romantic tendencies in favor of a more devout and narrative-driven approach.
The "Joseph Interpreting Pharaoh's Dream" fresco, along with the rest of the Casa Bartholdy frescoes, was later acquired by the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, where it remains an important example of early 19th-century German religious art and a testament to Peter von Cornelius's artistic vision and influence on the Nazarene movement.
