Painting Description
"King Arthur" by Peter Vischer the Elder is a notable bronze sculpture created by the German artist, who was one of the most prominent sculptors of the late Gothic period in Europe. The statue is part of a series of figures that adorn the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I, located in the Hofkirche (Court Church) in Innsbruck, Austria. The tomb, also known as the "Cenotaph of Maximilian I," is a monumental memorial that was intended to celebrate the Emperor's power and legacy, although his body is not interred there.
Peter Vischer the Elder (1455–1529) was commissioned to create the statue of King Arthur, which he completed in 1513. The figure of Arthur is one of 28 larger-than-life statues of ancestors, relatives, and heroes that were meant to surround the tomb. These figures represent an idealized gathering of rulers and warriors who were seen as historical and legendary exemplars of leadership and chivalry, suitable to commemorate the Emperor's status.
The sculpture of King Arthur stands out for its intricate detailing and the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance artistic elements, reflecting the transitional period in which Vischer worked. The figure is depicted in full regal attire, with a sword and orb, symbolizing his status as a king and a warrior. The statue is also notable for its realistic portrayal of armor and the dignified poise of the figure, which exemplifies the ideal of courtly grace and the virtues of knighthood that were associated with the Arthurian legend.
Peter Vischer the Elder's work on the tomb of Maximilian I, including the statue of King Arthur, is considered a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art and a significant contribution to the sculptural tradition of the period. The King Arthur statue, along with the other figures, has been praised for its artistic excellence and historical significance, making it an important part of Vischer's oeuvre and a valuable piece of cultural heritage.
