Painting Description
"The Obsequies of Decius Mus" is a series of paintings by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, created as part of a commission for a tapestry series depicting the life and heroic death of the Roman consul Decius Mus. Rubens, known for his exuberant Baroque style, completed the designs for the tapestries in the early 17th century, around 1616-1618. The series illustrates the narrative of Decius Mus's self-sacrifice during the Battle of Vesuvius in 340 BC, as recounted by the Roman historian Livy.
The paintings are a masterful example of Rubens's ability to convey dramatic intensity and movement, as well as his skill in rendering complex historical scenes. Each work within the series captures a different moment of the story, from the consul's decision to sacrifice himself for the Roman army's victory to the solemn funeral rites following his heroic death. The series is noted for its vivid portrayal of emotions, the dynamic composition of figures, and the rich, vibrant colors characteristic of Rubens's work.
The tapestries based on Rubens's designs were woven in the workshop of Jan Raes the Elder in Brussels, a center of tapestry production during the 17th century. The original paintings by Rubens served as modelli, or detailed models, from which the weavers could work to create the final tapestries. These works not only exemplify Rubens's talent as a painter but also highlight the collaborative nature of art production in the Baroque period, involving artists, designers, and craftsmen in the creation of luxurious and grandiose works of art.
Today, "The Obsequies of Decius Mus" series is recognized as an important part of Rubens's oeuvre and a significant contribution to the visual culture of the Baroque era. The paintings are held in various art collections, and the tapestries themselves are considered valuable artifacts that reflect the splendor and ambition of European courtly art during the time of their creation.
