Painting Description
"Massacre of the Innocents" is a painting by the Flemish Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the biblical episode of the infanticide ordered by King Herod in Bethlehem, as described in the Gospel of Matthew (2:16-18). Created circa 1611-1612, the work is renowned for its dramatic intensity, emotional power, and the virtuosic depiction of the human form in extreme states of distress and movement. Rubens' mastery of color and composition is evident in the chaotic and violent scene, which conveys the horror and tragedy of the event.
The painting showcases Rubens' skill in rendering the physical and psychological anguish of the figures, as well as his ability to capture the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The work is characterized by its high degree of realism, combined with a sense of theatricality that heightens the emotional impact on the viewer. The artist's use of chiaroscuro and his ability to convey the textures of flesh, fabric, and armor demonstrate his deep understanding of human anatomy and his keen observation of material properties.
"Massacre of the Innocents" was originally thought to be by one of Rubens' followers, until it was reattributed to the master himself after being cleaned and restored. The painting has a complex provenance, having passed through various collections in Europe before being sold at auction in 2002 for a record price for an Old Master painting at that time. It is now held in the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Canada.
This work is considered one of Rubens' most important and influential pieces, exemplifying the Baroque style's emphasis on emotion, movement, and sensory appeal. It has been widely studied and admired for its artistic and historical significance, and continues to be a key work for understanding Rubens' oeuvre and the broader context of Baroque art.
