Painting Description
Oviri is a ceramic sculpture produced in 1894 by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin. As an emblematic figure of the artist's primitive style, Oviri (meaning 'savage' or 'wild') is a representation of a Tahitian goddess of mourning and death. The work clearly showcases Gauguin's fascination with Polynesian mythology, cultural symbolism, and life-death dichotom. The sculpture features a nude, savage woman standing on a wolf killing a cub, embodying a complex spectrum of themes such as wildness, maternity, love, and death.
Gauguin created Oviri during the midpoint of his career, shortly after his first return from Tahiti. The sculpture was not publicly exhibited until after the artist's death. Paris's Musée d'Orsay currently houses Oviri, which remained relatively unknown until the mid-20th century. Since then, it has gained recognition as a pivotal work in Gauguin's oeuvre.
Oviri's creation underscores Gauguin's transition away from European artistic traditions, favoring instead a revolutionary and deeply personal symbolism of primitivism. This paradigm-shifting work is thought to have influenced the cubist sculptures of Pablo Picasso and has been the subject of literary interpretations, notably "Oviri: Ecrits d'un sauvage", a collection of writings by the artist himself.
