Painting Description
''Noa Noa'' is a travelogue written by the French post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, intended as a commentary and explanation of his experiences in Tahiti. The title, which translates to "fragrant" in Tahitian, reflects Gauguin's attempt to escape the "civilized" world and discover a primitive paradise where he could create pure, "primitive" art. Gauguin began writing ''Noa Noa'' shortly after returning to France in 1893, following his first trip to Tahiti, which lasted from 1891 to 1893.
The manuscript is a blend of autobiographical narrative, travelogue, and philosophical ruminations, accompanied by woodcuts that Gauguin himself created. It recounts his journey to Tahiti, his encounters with the local people, his romanticized view of Tahitian culture, and his quest for an unspoiled and authentic form of expression. Gauguin's writing is characterized by a poetic and often mystical tone, as he describes his search for a mythical "primitive" past that he believed was embodied in the Tahitian way of life.
''Noa Noa'' was originally conceived as a commentary to accompany and explain a series of ten woodcuts Gauguin produced between 1893 and 1894, known as the ''Noa Noa Suite''. The text was meant to provide a narrative context for these images, which were themselves highly symbolic and abstract. Gauguin intended for the book to serve as a defense against the criticism he faced from the European art establishment, as well as a means to promote his work and the exotic allure of Tahiti to a European audience.
The authenticity of Gauguin's account has been the subject of much debate among scholars. While ''Noa Noa'' purports to be a factual account of Gauguin's experiences, it is now recognized that the artist took significant creative liberties, often romanticizing and mythologizing his experiences to fit his artistic narrative. The book was not published in full during Gauguin's lifetime; it first appeared in print in 1919, several years after his death in 1903. Since its publication, ''Noa Noa'' has been both celebrated for its artistic insight and criticized for its colonialist perspective and misrepresentation of Tahitian culture.
''Noa Noa'' remains an important text for understanding Gauguin's art and his impact on the Primitivism movement in modern art. It provides insight into the artist's complex character, his views on civilization and the primitive, and his quest for artistic renewal through the embrace of what he perceived as a more authentic and uncorrupted way of life.
