Painting Description
"Mahana Atua" (Day of the God) is an oil painting on canvas by French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin. Completed in 1894, the artwork bears significant influence from Gaugu's stay in Tahiti and features elements that reflect the indigenous culture there. The painting displays Gauguin's vision of a primitive and exotic paradise, showcasing his innovative use of color, and departure from conventional western painting methods.
The painting, measuring 73.0 x 92.0 cm, features three figures set against a tropical landscape. The female figure at the centerfold attracts the viewer's attention with her red headband (borrowed from ancient Tahitian culture). Alongside her, two male figures complete the triad, their placement and poses offering a sense of balance. The composition uses bold, vibrant colors and employs a flattened, two-dimensional style, a method Gauguin adapted from Japanese prints— a stylistic choice that would later influence and characterize the Synthetist movement.
The title 'Day of the God' suggests a religious or spiritual narrative central to the work, positing an offer of a glimpse into the Tahitian belief system. However, Gauguin noted in his writings that such paintings were not to be taken as literal representations of specific Tahitian myths or rituals. Rather, they were intended as dreams or visions influenced by the indigenous culture.
"Mahana Atua" is just one of several paintings Gauguin produced in his Tahitian period, which was pivotal to his evolution as an artist. The artwork can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago collection, where it continues to captivate audiences with its allure and offer insight into Gauguin’s experiences in French Polynesia.
