Painting Description
"September Morn" is an oil painting by the French artist Paul Émile Chabas (1869–1937). Completed in 1912, the painting depicts a young nude woman standing in shallow water, seemingly lost in thought as she bathes in the early morning light of September. The work is characterized by its soft, pastel tones and the delicate play of light across the figure's form, which reflects Chabas's academic training and his mastery of the techniques of French Impressionism.
The painting gained notoriety in the United States when it was displayed in a Chicago art gallery in 1913 and subsequently became the subject of a public decency controversy. Its fame was further amplified when it was attacked by Anthony Comstock, a self-appointed crusader against vice, who deemed the work lewd and sought to have it removed from public view. Despite—or perhaps because of—the controversy, "September Morn" became a popular icon in American culture, widely reproduced on postcards, in newspapers, and in other forms of media.
"September Morn" is often cited as an example of early 20th-century French academic art and is notable for its influence on American social attitudes towards art and censorship. The painting is also a testament to the shifting boundaries of propriety and the role of art in challenging societal norms. Today, the original "September Morn" is part of a private collection, but its legacy endures as a symbol of the era's changing mores and the enduring conversation about the intersection of art, morality, and public perception.
