Painting Description
Anthony Valabregue" is a painting by French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne, dating back to approximately circa 1869-1871. This work of art is a portrait of Antony Valabrègue, who was a poet and a close friend of Cézanne's from their time together in Aix-en-Provence. The artwork is executed in the medium of oil on canvas and measures 45.7 x 37.5 cm.
The painting captures Valabrègue in a contemplative pose, making it a prominent example of Cézanne's early figurative work, illustrating his classical training and the impact of Romanticism in his early career. Cézanne's brushwork in this painting demonstrates his adept skill and complexity in portraying human emotion and character which stood in contrast to his better-known later works, where he abstracted forms to their geometric essences. Also, it is noteworthy that "Anthony Valabregue" is one among several portrait depictions of Valabrègue that the artist rendered, indicating the significance of the bond shared between the sitter and the artist.
The painting is currently housed in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, donated by Justin K. Thannhauser in 1978. Over the years, it has been included in various exhibitions and has been discussed extensively in art historical literature. Another version of this portrait titled "Bust of Antony Valabrègue" resides in Musée d'Orsay in Paris. This portrait is considered an essential contribution to Western portraiture tradition.
