Painting Description
"The Marriage at Cana" (also known as "The Wedding at Cana") is a monumental oil painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Paolo Veronese (1528–1588), completed in 1563. This masterpiece, which measures approximately 6.77 meters by 9.94 meters, is renowned for its grand scale and the opulence of its execution. It depicts the biblical story of the Marriage Feast at Cana, where Jesus performs his first miracle by turning water into wine, as recounted in the Gospel of John (2:1–11).
Veronese's interpretation of the scene is celebrated for its lavish representation of a 16th-century Venetian banquet, rather than a strictly biblical setting, which allows for a display of the artist's skill in portraying sumptuous textiles, intricate architectural details, and a diverse array of figures. The canvas is crowded with more than 130 figures, including guests, servants, musicians, and even the artist himself, who appears as a violin player in the ensemble. The work is also noted for its complex use of perspective and the vibrant interplay of light and color, which contribute to the painting's sense of depth and grandeur.
Originally commissioned for the refectory of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, the painting now resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris, having been acquired during the Napoleonic Wars. "The Marriage at Cana" is not only a highlight of Veronese's artistic career but also a significant example of Venetian Renaissance art, reflecting the era's cultural, religious, and social milieu. Its transfer from Venice to Paris was a matter of controversy and it remains a focal point of discussions regarding cultural heritage and the restitution of artworks.
