Painting Description
"Supper in the House of Levi" is a monumental painting created by the Italian Renaissance artist Paolo Veronese in 1573. Originally commissioned as a Last Supper for the refectory of the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, the work became the center of controversy due to its unconventional depiction of the biblical scene. Veronese's interpretation diverged significantly from traditional representations, incorporating a vast array of figures, including German soldiers, jesters, and even animals, which led to an inquisitorial investigation by the Roman Catholic Church.
The painting measures an impressive 18 feet 6 inches by 42 feet 6 inches (555 cm by 1280 cm), making it one of the largest canvases of the 16th century. Veronese's composition is characterized by its grand architectural setting, vibrant color palette, and intricate details, reflecting the opulence and dynamism of the Venetian Renaissance. The scene is set within a classical portico, with Christ and his apostles seated at a long table in the center, surrounded by a bustling crowd of over fifty figures engaged in various activities.
The Inquisition summoned Veronese to explain the inclusion of what they deemed inappropriate elements in a sacred scene. In his defense, Veronese argued that artistic freedom allowed for such creative liberties and that the additional figures were merely decorative. Despite his arguments, the Church ordered him to make changes to the painting. Instead of altering the work, Veronese simply changed its title to "Supper in the House of Levi," referencing a different biblical feast from the Gospel of Luke (5:29), thus circumventing the need for significant modifications.
Today, "Supper in the House of Levi" is housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, where it continues to be admired for its artistic brilliance and historical significance. The painting stands as a testament to Veronese's masterful skill and the broader cultural and religious tensions of the Renaissance period.
