Painting Description
''Feast in the House of Levi'' is a renowned Renaissance painting by the Venetian artist Paolo Veronese (1528–1588), completed in 1573. Originally commissioned as a Last Supper for the refectory of the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, the work became the subject of an Inquisition trial due to its unconventional depiction of the biblical scene. Veronese's interpretation was deemed irreverent for including a variety of figures not present in the Gospel accounts, such as German soldiers, dwarfs, and other secular characters, which led to accusations of heresy.
Measuring an impressive 5.55 x 12.8 meters, the painting is a monumental example of Mannerist art, characterized by its complex composition, elongated figures, and vibrant color palette. After the Inquisition's interrogation, Veronese was instructed to make changes to the painting. Instead of altering the existing figures, he cleverly resolved the issue by renaming the piece from ''Last Supper'' to ''Feast in the House of Levi,'' thus referencing a different biblical event that allowed for a more inclusive and less strictly religious interpretation.
The painting is celebrated for its dramatic use of perspective and light, as well as its detailed portrayal of a wide array of human expressions and interactions. Veronese's mastery in depicting luxurious textiles and sumptuous banquets is also evident in this work. ''Feast in the House of Levi'' remains on display in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, where it continues to be admired for its artistic innovation and historical significance as a testament to the tension between artistic freedom and ecclesiastical authority during the Counter-Reformation.
