Painting Description
'''Feast in the House of Levi''' is a renowned oil painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Paolo Veronese (1528–1588), also known as Paolo Caliari. Completed in 1573, the work is a monumental depiction of the biblical story of Christ dining with Levi, the tax collector, who would later become the Apostle Matthew. The painting was originally commissioned as a Last Supper for the refectory of the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, a Dominican order monastery.
The canvas measures an impressive 18.3 by 42 feet (5.6 by 12.8 meters), showcasing Veronese's mastery of large-scale compositions and his penchant for opulence and grandeur. The work is celebrated for its sumptuous detail, rich color palette, and the variety of characters and expressions it portrays. Veronese's interpretation of the biblical scene is unique in its inclusion of a multitude of figures and subsidiary narratives, which infuse the painting with a sense of vibrancy and life that was unconventional for religious art of the time.
The painting's original title, ''The Last Supper'', led to a famous controversy. In 1573, the Inquisition summoned Veronese to explain why he had included various irreverent elements in the scene, such as German soldiers, dwarfs, and other non-biblical characters. In his defense, Veronese argued that he was following the conventions of artistic license and the inclusion of such figures was part of his artistic interpretation. To appease the Inquisition, he agreed to change the title to ''Feast in the House of Levi'', thus reframing the scene as a less strictly biblical event and avoiding any doctrinal error.
Today, ''Feast in the House of Levi'' is housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy, where it continues to be admired for its artistic brilliance and historical significance. The painting stands as a testament to Veronese's skill as a painter and his ability to navigate the complex interplay between art, religion, and politics in Renaissance Venice.
