Painting Description
The Rice Portrait of Jane Austen is an alleged portrait of the English novelist Jane Austen said to have been painted by Ozias Humphry in 1788 or 1789. The painting is named after the Rice family, who were its longtime owners and who claimed descent from Jane Austen's brother, Edward Austen Knight. The subject of the portrait is a young girl in her early teens, which has led to speculation that it could be one of the earliest known images of Jane Austen, who would have been around that age at the time the portrait was supposedly created.
The authenticity of the Rice Portrait has been a subject of intense debate among Austen scholars and art experts. While some have supported the claim that it depicts Jane Austen, others have cast doubt on its provenance and the identity of the sitter. The National Portrait Gallery in London, which houses the only acknowledged portrait of Austen made during her lifetime (a sketch by her sister Cassandra), has not accepted the Rice Portrait as a depiction of Jane Austen.
The portrait itself is an oil painting on canvas and shows a young girl in a white dress holding a green parasol. The style of the dress and the technique of the painting are consistent with late 18th-century British portraiture. Ozias Humphry (1742-1810) was a respected English portraitist of the period, known for his miniatures and larger works in oil. However, the attribution of the painting to Humphry, as well as the identification of the sitter as Jane Austen, remains controversial.
The Rice Portrait has changed hands several times and has been the subject of extensive technical examination, including pigment analysis and digital age progression, in attempts to resolve its mysteries. Despite these efforts, the painting's status as a true likeness of Jane Austen remains unconfirmed, and it continues to be a topic of fascination and debate within both the art and literary communities.
