Painting Description
"Cleopatra" is a remarkable painting by Orazio Gentileschi, a prominent Italian Baroque painter. Completed around 1630, the painting brilliantly depicts Cleopatra, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Gentileschi, known for his remarkable precision and coloristic refinement, uses his traditional Caravaggisti style to dramatize the moment of Cleopatra's death.
The painting showcases Cleopatra in her final moments after the fatal snakebite, a classic theme in the Baroque period, depicting the transcience of earthly power and vanity. Yet, this work stands out for its departure from typically grotesque portrayals of Cleopatra's death. Instead, Gentileschi imbues the scene with an air of noble serenity, portraying the queen in a state of elegant repose. Her winding gaze, the limp arm holding a gilded scepter, and the dead asp at her bosom powerfully express her regal dignity even in the face of death.
This oil on canvas painting measures 90.2 cm by 71.1 cm, a size that allowed Gentileschi to present fine-scale detail without forgoing the impact of the larger narrative. The painting initially belonged to Charles I of England and was listed in the inventory of his collection after his execution. It was subsequently sold and had various owners before finding its current home at the Detroit Institute of Art.
"Cleopatra" by Orazio Gentileschi is a significant work of art that offers insight into the Baroque period's stylistic conventions, thematic concerns, and modes of interpreting historical and legendary figures.
