Painting Description
"Ordination" is one of the seven paintings in the series known as the "Seven Sacraments" created by the French painter Nicolas Poussin. Painted between 1636 and 1642 for Cassiano dal Pozzo, a Roman collector and antiquarian, these works are among Poussin's most significant religious commissions and reflect the artist's mature classical style. "Ordination" specifically depicts the sacrament of Holy Orders, the process by which men are consecrated as deacons, priests, or bishops within the Christian church.
The painting is set within an architectural space that suggests a church interior, and Poussin employs his mastery of perspective and light to draw the viewer's attention to the central action: the laying on of hands, which is the essential ritual of the ordination ceremony. The figures are arranged in a calm and orderly composition, typical of Poussin's approach to narrative and his desire to express the gravity and solemnity of the religious scene.
"Ordination" and the rest of the "Seven Sacraments" series are celebrated for their harmonious composition, clarity of storytelling, and the depth of theological understanding they convey. These works had a profound influence on the development of French painting, particularly in the classical tradition, and they continue to be studied for their artistic and iconographic significance.
Originally housed in the collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo, the "Seven Sacraments" series has a complex provenance. "Ordination," along with the other paintings in the series, has been held in various private and public collections over the centuries. The series was split up in the 18th century, and some of the paintings have been lost or damaged over time. The surviving works from the series, including "Ordination," are considered masterpieces of 17th-century French art and are held in high esteem by art historians and collectors alike.
