Painting Description
"L'Extrême-onction" is a significant work painted by the French Baroque artist Nicolas Poussin between 1638-1640. This painting depicts the Catholic sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as the Extreme Unction.
This grand canvas, measuring 94.4 x 120 cm, is part of a seven-painting series entitled 'The Seven Sacraments,' commissioned by Poussin's friend and patron, Cassiano dal Pozzo. These works, which are currently housed in the collection of the Duke of Sutherland and held on loan at the National Gallery of Scotland, represent critical sacraments in the Christian faith.
"L'Extrême-onction" portrays a touching scene where a dying man is receiving his final sacrament in the presence of family and clergy. Set in a domestic interior familiar from the 17th century, the painting emphasizes the temporal and the spiritual world through the careful positioning of the figures and the significant use of dramatic chiaroscuro lighting.
Poussin's classicist painting style, combined with his deep understanding of the human condition, comes to the fore in this artwork. He expertly uses earthly and muted tones to underscore the solemnity of the moment, while the naturalistic details of the characters heighten the painting's emotional realism.
Despite its clear religious message, "L'Extrême-onction" is a universal testament to the human experience, eliciting deep emotions of empathy and understanding from its viewers. As with the rest of the 'The Seven Sacraments' series, this painting displays Nicolas Poussin's extraordinary ability to convey profound spiritual themes subtly and emotionally. His ability to detail emotional resonance in the mortality of life is an enduring component of his virtuosity and his enduring legacy in the canon of European art.
