Painting Description
"Camillus and the Schoolmaster of Falerii, c. 1635-40, is a historical genre painting by the eminent French artist of the classical Baroque era, Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665). While influenced by the stylings of the High Renaissance, Poussin's work is renowned for his own brand of expressive clarity and high finish, both of which are visible in this.
The painting depicts a narrative from ancient Roman history, specifically the legendary account of Marcus Furius Camillus (c. 446 BC – 365 BC) and the Schoolmaster of Falerii. According to the recounted tale, during the siege of Falerii, a city at war with Rome, a schoolmaster from the city attempted to betray his own city by leading his youthful charges, including the children of important citizens and nobles, into the hands of the Romans. In the painting, the treacherous schoolmaster is presented before Camillus, the Roman commander.
Poussin represents the moment when Camillus displays an act of integrity, decisively rejecting the schoolmaster's betrayal. He chooses, instead, to maintain the honour of war, reflecting the values of the Roman civilisation. The composition depicts Camillus as a stoic and principled figure, shunning opportunistic treachery, and thereby underscoring a lesson in moral rectitude.
Utilising the tenets of classicism, the painting's composition, order, and the calmness in the face of potential chaos are characteristic of Poussin's mature style. The colour palette is subdued, accentuating the gravity of the painted scene. The artwork remains an important contribution to the oeuvre of Poussin, demonstrating his adept treatment of profound historical narratives and their implicit moral dimensions.
As of the time of writing, the location of this painting is unknown."
