Painting Description
"Moses on Mount Sinai" is a notable work by Nicolas of Verdun, a French or possibly Flemish goldsmith and enameller who was active during the 12th century, renowned for his work in the Mosan art style. This particular piece is part of a larger ensemble known as the Klosterneuburg Altar, which is considered one of the masterpieces of Romanesque goldsmith's work. The altar was commissioned for the Klosterneuburg Monastery in Austria and completed in 1181.
The "Moses on Mount Sinai" scene is one of 51 gilded copper plaques that depict various biblical scenes from the life of Jesus and the history of salvation, with this specific plaque illustrating the momentous event of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, as described in the book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible. Nicolas of Verdun's work is characterized by its intricate champlevé enamel technique, where cells are carved into the metal and filled with vitreous enamel, and then fired to create vibrant, colored images.
The plaque stands out for its detailed craftsmanship and the way it conveys the narrative through the use of iconography and symbolism, which was typical of the Romanesque period. The figure of Moses is often depicted in a commanding posture, with the Tablets of the Law prominently displayed, signifying the divine authority of the commandments and their central role in Judeo-Christian ethics and law.
The Klosterneuburg Altar, including the "Moses on Mount Sinai" plaque, is not only a testament to Nicolas of Verdun's skill as an artist but also an important cultural artifact that reflects the religious and artistic sensibilities of the 12th century in Europe. It remains an object of study for art historians and scholars of medieval art, as well as a significant piece within the collection of the Klosterneuburg Monastery, where it continues to be displayed.
