Painting Description
''Psyches et Amoris Nuptiae ac Fabula a Raphaele'' is a series of engravings by the French artist Nicolas Dorigny (1658–1746). These engravings are based on the frescoes painted by the Italian Renaissance master Raphael Sanzio, commonly known as Raphael, in the Villa Farnesina in Rome. The frescoes themselves depict scenes from the story of Cupid and Psyche as told by the Latin author Apuleius in his work, ''The Golden Ass''.
Dorigny, who was also a painter, spent a significant portion of his career in Italy, where he was deeply influenced by the works of Italian masters. His series on Raphael's frescoes is considered one of his most important works. The engravings translate Raphael's celebrated frescoes into detailed prints, allowing for the wider dissemination of the Renaissance artist's designs and compositions during a period when travel was limited and access to such works was restricted to the privileged few who could visit the actual sites.
The ''Psyches et Amoris Nuptiae ac Fabula a Raphaele'' series is notable for its fidelity to Raphael's original designs and for the technical skill Dorigny demonstrated in the medium of engraving. The series contributed to the spread of Raphael's style and the Italian High Renaissance aesthetic throughout Europe, influencing artists and connoisseurs alike. Dorigny's engravings are not only significant as works of art in their own right but also as historical documents that preserve and propagate the visual culture of the Renaissance.
The engravings were completed and published in the early 18th century, and they were well-received, earning Dorigny a prestigious membership in the Academy of St. Luke in Rome. Today, the series is studied for its artistic merit and as an example of the cultural exchange between Italy and France during the Baroque period. It remains a testament to the enduring legacy of Raphael's art and the role of printmaking in art history.
