Painting Description
The Apocalypse of Angers, the first in a series of monumental tapestries created by Nicolas Bataille, stands as a significant masterpiece of medieval textile art. Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, in the late 14th century, this extensive tapestry series vividly illustrates the Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament. The project was initiated around 1373 and completed by 1382, showcasing the collaborative efforts of Bataille, who was the master weaver, and the renowned Parisian painter Hennequin de Bruges, who provided the intricate designs.
The tapestry series originally consisted of 90 scenes, though only 71 have survived the ravages of time. Measuring approximately 140 meters in length and 6 meters in height, The Apocalypse of Angers is one of the largest and most ambitious tapestry cycles ever produced. Each panel is rich with iconography and symbolism, meticulously woven with wool and silk threads that have retained their vibrant colors over the centuries.
The narrative depicted in the tapestries follows the apocalyptic visions described by St. John the Divine, featuring dramatic scenes of angels, beasts, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. The vivid imagery and detailed craftsmanship reflect the Gothic artistic sensibilities of the period, as well as the theological and eschatological concerns of the late Middle Ages.
Today, The Apocalypse of Angers is housed in the Château d'Angers in France, where it continues to be a focal point of historical and artistic study. The tapestry not only represents a pinnacle of medieval artistry but also provides invaluable insights into the religious and cultural milieu of 14th-century Europe. Its preservation and display allow contemporary audiences to appreciate the grandeur and complexity of this extraordinary work.
