Painting Description
"St. John Eating the Book" is a notable work by Nicolas Bataille, a prominent French tapestry artist of the 14th century. This piece is part of the larger series known as the "Apocalypse Tapestry," which is considered one of the most significant and ambitious tapestry cycles of the medieval period. Commissioned by Louis I, the Duke of Anjou, in the late 1370s, the tapestry series illustrates scenes from the Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, which details the apocalyptic visions of St. John the Divine.
The "Apocalypse Tapestry" originally consisted of 90 scenes, though only 71 have survived to the present day. "St. John Eating the Book" is one of these surviving scenes and depicts a moment from Revelation 10:9-10, where St. John is instructed by an angel to eat a small scroll. The act of consuming the book symbolizes the internalization of divine prophecy and wisdom, a theme that resonates deeply within Christian eschatological traditions.
Nicolas Bataille's work is renowned for its intricate detail, vivid coloration, and the ability to convey complex theological narratives through the medium of tapestry. The "Apocalypse Tapestry" was woven in Paris between 1377 and 1382, under the artistic direction of Bataille, who collaborated with the painter Hennequin de Bruges, also known as Jan Bondol, who provided the detailed designs or cartoons for the tapestries.
"St. John Eating the Book" exemplifies the Gothic style prevalent during the period, characterized by its elaborate ornamentation and expressive figures. The tapestry's rich iconography and meticulous craftsmanship offer a window into the medieval mindset and its interpretation of biblical prophecy. Today, the "Apocalypse Tapestry" is housed in the Château d'Angers in France, where it continues to be a subject of study and admiration for its artistic and historical significance.
