Painting Description
The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is an iconic Baroque fountain located in the Trevi district of Rome, Italy, and is one of the most famous and visually striking water features in the world. Designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others, the fountain stands as a monumental example of 18th-century art and architecture. It was commissioned in 1732 by Pope Clement XII and took approximately 30 years to complete, with its inauguration in 1762.
The Trevi Fountain dominates the small Trevi Square (Piazza di Trevi) with its grandiose design and theatrical composition. The central figure of the fountain is the god Oceanus, who is depicted riding a chariot in the form of a shell, pulled by sea horses and guided by Tritons. The theme of the fountain is the taming of the waters, a reference to the ancient Roman aqueducts that supplied water to Rome, particularly the Aqua Virgo, which is the aqueduct that provides water to the fountain.
Salvi's design was chosen after a competition, and his original plans were modified during the construction. The fountain is constructed of travertine stone, a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, and Carrara marble, a high-quality white or blue-grey marble. The Trevi Fountain stands at an impressive 26.3 meters (86 feet) high and 49.15 meters (161.3 feet) wide, making it the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.
Beyond its artistic significance, the Trevi Fountain has become embedded in popular culture and is associated with a number of traditions and beliefs, the most famous of which is the coin-throwing ritual. Legend has it that if visitors throw a coin over their shoulder into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. The fountain has also been featured in numerous films, including the classic 'La Dolce Vita' directed by Federico Fellini.
As a masterpiece of Baroque art, the Trevi Fountain remains a major tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors each year, and continues to be a symbol of Rome's rich history and cultural heritage. Its intricate design and the theatricality of its sculptures exemplify the grandeur of Roman baroque and the city's tradition of public art.
