Painting Description
"Just Judges" is a painting by the Flemish artist Michiel Coxie, created as a replacement for the missing panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, originally painted by Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert. The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb," is a renowned polyptych housed in St. Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. The original "Just Judges" panel was stolen in 1934 and has never been recovered, making it one of the most famous art thefts in history.
Michiel Coxie, often referred to as the "Flemish Raphael," was commissioned to create a replica of the missing panel. Coxie was a prominent Renaissance painter known for his religious works and his ability to emulate the styles of earlier masters. His version of "Just Judges" was intended to seamlessly integrate with the remaining panels of the altarpiece, preserving the overall composition and thematic unity.
The "Just Judges" panel depicts a group of judges, symbolizing justice and righteousness, riding on horseback. The figures are richly dressed, reflecting the opulence and detailed realism characteristic of the Northern Renaissance. Coxie's work aimed to capture the intricate details and vibrant colors that were hallmarks of the van Eycks' original masterpiece.
Despite being a replacement, Coxie's "Just Judges" holds significant historical and artistic value. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Ghent Altarpiece and the ongoing fascination with its history and mysteries. The panel continues to attract attention from art historians and enthusiasts, contributing to discussions about art restoration, authenticity, and the impact of art theft on cultural heritage.
Coxie's contribution to the Ghent Altarpiece underscores the importance of preserving and reconstructing lost artworks, allowing contemporary audiences to appreciate the grandeur and complexity of one of the most celebrated works of the Northern Renaissance.
