Painting Description
"The Calling of Saint Matthew" is a masterpiece of Baroque painting by the Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, commonly known as Caravaggio. Completed in 1599–1600, the painting is renowned for its dramatic use of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro, which became a hallmark of Caravaggio's work. It is housed in the Contarelli Chapel of the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, where it remains on public display.
The painting depicts the moment from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 9:9) when Jesus Christ inspires Matthew to follow him, leading to Matthew's conversion and subsequent life as an apostle. Caravaggio's interpretation of this biblical scene is notable for its realistic portrayal of the figures and the use of contemporary dress, bringing a sense of immediacy and relevance to the 16th-century viewer. The composition is arranged diagonally, with the figure of Christ at one end, pointing towards Matthew, who is seated at a table with other tax collectors.
Caravaggio's innovative use of light not only highlights the figures but also serves to guide the viewer's eye through the narrative, with a beam of light illuminating Matthew's face as he looks up in surprise. This directional light creates a theatrical effect, emphasizing the spiritual awakening taking place. The contrast between the earthly occupation of the tax collectors and the divine calling by Christ is further accentuated by the stark differences in illumination within the scene.
"The Calling of Saint Matthew" is part of a series of three paintings Caravaggio created for the Contarelli Chapel, each focusing on an episode from the life of Saint Matthew. Together with "The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew" and "The Inspiration of Saint Matthew," this work exemplifies Caravaggio's impact on religious art of the period and his influence on the development of the Baroque style in painting. The piece is celebrated for its narrative power, emotional depth, and Caravaggio's revolutionary artistic techniques, which have earned it a central place in the history of Western art.
