Painting Description
"St. Jerome in Meditation" (also known as "St. Jerome2") is an oil on canvas painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, believed to have been completed around 1605-1606. This artwork is one of two paintings by Caravaggio of the same subject, the other being "St. Jerome Writing." Both works depict Saint Jerome, a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism, renowned for his translation of the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate).
In "St. Jerome in Meditation," Caravaggio presents a more introspective portrayal of the saint. The painting is characterized by its dramatic use of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro, which was a defining feature of Caravaggio's style. The saint is depicted in a moment of deep contemplation, seated in a dark, cave-like space with a skull, a common symbol of mortality and penitence, and a crucifix, representing his Christian faith.
The painting is currently housed in the Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi, Rome. Despite its relatively obscure status compared to some of Caravaggio's other works, "St. Jerome in Meditation" is a significant example of the artist's ability to convey intense spiritual and emotional states through his innovative use of light, color, and composition.
