Painting Description
''Sick Bacchus'' (Italian: ''Bacco malato'') is a self-portrait by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, painted between 1593 and 1594. The painting, which is held in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, Italy, depicts a youthful, yet visibly ailing Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, fertility, and revelry. The work is executed in oil on canvas and measures 67 cm × 53 cm.
Caravaggio, known for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro and realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, presents a stark contrast to the traditional depictions of deities. Instead of an idealized image of Bacchus, Caravaggio chose to portray the god as a sickly young man, draped in a loose, classical robe with a crown of ivy, his skin showing signs of jaundice, and his gaze imbued with a sense of languor and malaise.
The painting is believed to have been created shortly after Caravaggio's arrival in Rome, during a period when he was suffering from an illness, which is reflected in the subject's pallor and sickly appearance. The ''Sick Bacchus'' is considered an early example of Caravaggio's pioneering naturalism, a style that would later become a hallmark of his oeuvre and exert a profound influence on the development of Baroque art.
The work's provenance is not thoroughly documented until it entered the collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the early 17th century. The ''Sick Bacchus'' has been the subject of extensive art historical research and analysis, with scholars debating various aspects of its creation, iconography, and the implications of Caravaggio's personal circumstances on its execution. Despite its early date, the painting already showcases Caravaggio's skill in rendering the textures of flesh, fruit, and foliage, as well as his ability to evoke complex psychological states through portraiture.
