Painting Description
"La Vocazione di San Matteo" (The Calling of Saint Matthew) is a masterpiece by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, painted between 1599 and 1600 for the Contarelli Chapel in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. This work is renowned for its dramatic use of chiaroscuro and its powerful depiction of a biblical scene. The painting illustrates the moment from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 9:9), when Jesus Christ inspires Matthew to follow him, marking the conversion of the tax collector into one of Jesus's apostles.
Caravaggio's innovative approach to the subject matter is evident in the way he merges the sacred with the profane, bringing a sense of realism to the scene that was unprecedented at the time. The figures are depicted in contemporary dress, and the setting is a dark, ordinary space that contrasts with the divine light illuminating the scene, symbolizing the spiritual awakening of Saint Matthew. The composition is notable for its use of light to draw the viewer's eye to the interaction between Christ, whose presence is understated yet commanding, and Matthew, who responds with a gesture of surprise and incredulity.
"La Vocazione di San Matteo" is part of a series of three paintings Caravaggio created for the Contarelli Chapel, the other two being "The Inspiration of Saint Matthew" and "The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew." Together, these works mark a significant contribution to the Baroque period and exemplify Caravaggio's impact on the development of Western art. The painting remains in situ in the Contarelli Chapel, where it continues to be admired for its emotional depth and technical brilliance.
